How the AlphaTheta People’s Choice is decided

Voting opens Sunday 6 September and closes 11:59pm Saturday 19 September. Open Category only, and open to anyone, anywhere. You need to sign in to vote so we can confirm every vote is a real person. One vote per DJ per person. You cannot vote for the same DJ twice, but you can back as many DJs as you like.

The prize is a place on the National Final stage. The winning DJ goes straight through to the final at Oxford Art Factory, Sydney, on Sunday 11 October, joining the four DJs the judges put through. The result is announced Sunday 20 September.

Your vote is the biggest part of the result, but not the only part. YouTube views and comments on the elimination videos count as well, because that is real audience response.

We rank the nine Open DJs three times. Once by site votes, once by YouTube views, once by YouTube comments. In each list the leader scores 9 points, second scores 8, and so on down to 1 point for ninth, so every DJ scores in every list. Site votes are then multiplied by four, YouTube views by two, and YouTube comments by one. The highest combined total takes the spot. That means the people who sign in and vote carry more weight than everything on YouTube put together.

The weighting
Site votes ×4  ·  maximum 36 points
YouTube views ×2  ·  maximum 18 points
YouTube comments ×1  ·  maximum 9 points
Highest possible total 63 points

Site vote totals are live on this page. YouTube figures are updated every 15 minutes. The final reading is taken when voting closes, and the full scorecard is published with the announcement on Sunday 20 September, in the same format as the judges’ scorecards.

If ranks are tied, the tie is broken on site votes, then views, then comments. If it is still tied, the judges decide, and their decision is final.

Vote integrity

Every vote is recorded against the email address used to cast it and the internet connection it came from. We review this record daily.

Where several accounts are used by the same person to vote for the same DJ, all but one of those votes will be removed. At the close of voting we contact every voter, and any vote attached to an email address that proves undeliverable will be removed before the final count.

Site votes, views or comments we believe have been bought or generated artificially will be discounted, and any DJ involved may be withdrawn from the AlphaTheta People’s Choice. Repeat attempts will result in withdrawal. YouTube is not a sponsor of this competition.

How we handle this information is set out in our privacy policy.
