The 2024 Australian DMC DJ Championships

The longest-running Worldwide DJ Competition “The DMC World DJ Championships” is back for 2024 and this year we introduce the NEW “Open Format Category” where any equipment (CDJs / Controllers/ Effects) will be allowed! This category is aimed at the Club DJ and promises to be a crowd-pleaser. Competitors have to win over the judges as well as the crowd with a 12min set mixing multiple genres and styles creatively. We are going back to the roots with the category and hopefully open doors for DJs of all different genres to compete in the DMC. There is already hype for this category at the World Finals and we are very excited to be launching it down under. Our popular classic 6 min category will run as per usual and will cater to the Turntablist / Scratch DJs.

DMC will be touring the country with Heats in every major state throughout this August and September. All state champs will land in Melbourne to battle it out at the National Finals Saturday on the 14^th September at the iconic Revolver, and the lucky winners (from both categories) will travel to Paris for the World Finals on 18^th October. Headlining the finals is the 3 X World Champ JFB (UK) who will also be head judge of the 2 categories on the night.

DMC reached our shores in 1988 and gave many Australian DJs an opportunity to showcase their talents on a world stage. Many past Australian DMC Champs have made a long lasting career in this very competitive industry. This year DMC Australia is joining forces with DJ CITY to introduce the new category, level up production, and give the competitors as well as punters a lil something extra at the Championships.

Max Best from Tasmania took out the Australian Title last year and placed 4^th at the World Finals in San Francisco! Let’s see if he will defend and do it once again. Many new talented DJs as well as established DJs will be entering in every state to take on their reigning state champion and fight for the crown. The state heats kick off with the VIC Championships on Friday 30^th August at The Gaso followed by WA, NSW, QLD, and TAS.

DMC (short for Disco Mix Club) was initially known as a mixing competition when the competition launched way back in 1985. However when DJ Cheese won the world title in 1986 showcasing the art of scratching and turntablism for the first time, the comp gravitated towards this new technical format and has been known for it ever since. So for the first time since it’s conception DMC and branches have decided to bring back the foundational elements of the DJ : mixing, blending and rocking the crowd.

For this new category the competitors must showcase a solid mixture of genres, eras, and tempos. Judging will be based on music selection, composition, originality, foundation, showmanship, and overall impact. Any equipment (CDJs / Controllers / Effects) will be allowed.

From the qualifying 6-minute online sets, the judges will select the top 4 finalists. These finalists will travel to Melbourne on 14th September to perform a 12-minute solo set. The winner will receive the title of “2024 DMC Open Australian Champion” and will advance to the 2024 DMC World Finals in Paris.

N.B Being our first year, we will hold the eliminations online and finals live! However, if we have high number of competitors in each state we will host “State Heats” live (same date and venue as classic showcase category). We will advise competitors and announce accordingly if this occurs.
