Battle Format

Classic Showcase Format

This is DMC’s classic solo showcase style DJ battle, established in 1985.  DJs will each perform a 2 min. routine for the elimination round. Qualified and respected judges will select the top 6 to advance to the final round. The top 6 finalists will each perform a 6 min. routine. The champion of this battle will advance to the next battle level (National or World Finals). N.B Eliminations are at the discretion of each state promoter and you should check in with the promoter to see if this will apply to you.

– EQUIPMENT

DJs must use up to two Turntables and one DJ Mixer to compete. Brands may vary from country to country. DJs can use vinyl, DVS or both. DJs must supply their own headphones, slipmats, needles, records, laptops, power cords, usb cords, control vinyl, laptop stands etc. No controllers, CDJs, multi media players, production gear etc. are permitted. Rane Twelve turntable/controllers are permitted if available. Phase wireless technology is also permitted. This battle does not permit a video component.

– TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY

If any DJ’s performance is judged to be hindered or halted due to equipment failure they will be permitted to start their performance from the beginning. If the breakdown is due to the DJs own faulty setup, they will be allowed to begin again from the point of the breakdown.

– NATIONALITY

Competitors must be citizens of the nation in which they are competing or be able to prove that they have resided in the nation for a minimum of 6 years. 

– JUDGING

DMC founder: Tony Prince – created this competition with no judging criteria. Judges “may” look for the following in any DJs set: Originality, Scratching, Beat Juggling, Showmanship/Stage Presence, Composition, Creativity, Execution, Technicality and/or Musicality. *These are not categories – just criteria that judges consider loosely.

The DMC Open (Live and ONLINE)

Established in 2024, The DMC Open is DMC’s first open-format mixing DJ competition. Can you win the crowd? Is your music library deep enough? The first DMC Open Australian Champion must showcase a solid mixture of genres, eras, and tempos.

From the qualifying 6-minute online sets, the judges will select the top 4 finalists. These finalists will travel to Melbourne on 14th September to perform a 12-minute solo set. The winner will receive the title of “2024 DMC Open Australian Champion” and will advance to the 2024 DMC World Finals in Paris.

Important Dates:

Qualifier Round – Online (6 min set)

  • 26th August – 1st September: Submission deadline
  • 2nd September – 3rd September: Judging period
  • 4th September: Top 4 finalists announced

National Finals – Live (12 min set)

  • 14th September: National Finals Melbourne: Top 4 to perform 12 min sets in front of Live Audience and Judges. Competitors must make his/ her own way to Melbourne to compete.

Online Submission Format:

  • Each DJ must register via https://dmcaustralia.com.au/2024-battle-entry-form/ and submit a 6-min video (One Drive/ Google Drive / Dropbox Link) to info@dmcaustralia.com.au by the deadline.
  • The video recording must have a 16:9 format , at least full HD resolution ( 1920×1080 ) and clear sound recorded directly from the mixer (or equivalent sound quality). Contact us if you need assistance in setting this up.
  • Do not include logos, nicknames, etc. in the recording and we do not change the frame. It must be one uninterrupted shot from one perspective that shows the entire person and equipment, not just the hands.
  • Cuts, frame changes, animations, and similar video editing are not allowed.
  • The recording must not contain visually indecent content [nudity, pornography, etc.]
  • The recording cannot exceed the set time by more than 4 seconds.
  • Entries that do not meet the technical requirements of the recording will be automatically disqualified – regardless of the level of the performance presented in them.

Equipment:

– All DJ equipment is allowed

– DJs must supply headphones, slipmats, needles, records, laptops, power cords, USB cords, control vinyl, and laptop stands.

Technical Difficulty:

– DJs experiencing equipment failure can restart their performance from the beginning.

– If equipment fails due to faulty setup, DJs can restart from the breakdown point.

Nationality:

– Competitors must be citizens or residents of the nation they are competing in for at least 6 years.

Judging:

– Judges evaluate performances based on music selection, composition, originality, foundation, showmanship, and overall impact.

N.B Being our first year, we will hold the eliminations online and finals live! However, if we have high number of competitors in each state we will host “State Heats” live (same date and venue as classic showcase category). We will advise competitors and announce accordingly if this occurs.
